Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media
A unique nationwide pilot project by Hamburg museums, exhibition venues and memorials on sustainability and operational ecology – Eleven Hamburg museums are taking responsibility and making a concrete contribution to the path towards climate neutrality for society as a whole. Together, they are tackling the issue of sustainability and operational ecology in their museums. “Elf zu null” cooperates with the nationwide Aktionsnetzwerk Nachhaltigkeit in Kultur und Medien (Action Network Sustainability in Culture and Media) and is funded by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media.
The launch of the joint initiative consisted of two processes. Representatives of the museums came together with experts to draw up carbon footprints for the museums as a data basis. Here, the museums collected an analysis of their current situation with data from 2019 in order to make their emission sources transparent and reveal the major levers for change.
The next step was to train 20 people as transformation managers in order to integrate the topic of sustainability into everyday museum life. Through a combination of scientifically sound transformation skills, impulses from experts and tangible climate protection practices, graduates of the training course are enabled to use their knowledge as transformation managers to initiate, accompany or implement processes and projects in institutions. A central element is the networking and exchange between the participants from the various institutions. The aim of the collective project was to advance the sustainability transformation in the museums consistently and in the long term.
